Apparently, I knocked back out because the next thing I knew I was lifting my head from beneath one of Seron’s pillows. I shamelessly snuggled my face back into it, inhaling the scent that was my vampire hero’s. It was a hard-to-decipher scent. Kind of a mix of a natural masculine smell with an air of spring. Most likely whatever soap he used when he showered. I hadn’t really stopped to smell any of them and wasn’t quite clear on if they wore cologne.

A knock at the door had me jilting away from his pillow like I’d been doing something bad. “Come in,” I called out, moving myself onto my back so I looked like I had been merely sleeping.

The door opened and Lynx came through holding a wooden tray in his hands. I was pleased to see he too had dropped wearing his mask around. While he had the same nose as Hell, his lips were a bit fuller than both him and Seron’s. His patchy brows a bit more drawn down toward the middle as if they were in a permanent scowl. His black and red eyes flicked around and his square jaw tightened nervously as he stood there. I had a feeling he was worried about my eyes perusing his face unabashedly.

“Hi,” I said calmly, hoping he could see that I held no disgust for him.

His shoulders lost a bit of tension and the corners of his lips turned up a bit. “Since I finally caught you awake, I figured you could use something in your stomach. Thought best to keep it light with a broth Vile whipped up last night and some bread.” He held up the tray, silently asking if I wanted it.

“That would be great. Thank you.”

He walked toward me with confidence now, setting the tray across my lap as I pushed up to rest my back against the headboard. He sat on the edge of the bed while I breathed in the smell of the dark liquid in the bowl. My mouth instantly watered. I ripped a piece of the lump of bread off and dunked it into the broth, shoving the bite into my mouth and moaning happily.

“We were worried about you,” Lynx admitted, sadness thick in his voice. “When Ser came in with you frozen and unconscious, we feared the worst. He was lucky to get you out when he did.”

I dropped the spoon I’d been sipping the broth from. “It happened so quick. I thought I would die. Felt like it.”

“You very nearly were. Noir… your heart rate was so slow. Barely beating at all. The temperature outside is below freezing and a few seconds longer in that water and you would in fact be dead.”

Yet again, I was taken aback by the sheer amount of emotion Lynx was displaying. Sure, he’d been the easiest to read between him, Hell, and Seron—but seeing how solemn he was and hearing it in his voice was shocking. Another tiny piece of the block I’d been building up against all of them in my mind broke away.
